I'm a musician and artist from Mexico City, currently living in New York. It is my experience that art and music have a mystical, transformative power. They can uplift an individual into a state of aesthetic euphoria and thereby provide some respite from the friction created by being human. I hope that if in my work I sincerely strive for this experience then I can pass it along.
I graduated from Oberlin Conservatory in 2011 with a degree in Jazz Studies where I studied with Billy Hart. Since then I have performed as a drummer around the NYC area with an array of songwriters including Cassandra Jenkins, Stephen Chen (of San Fermin) and Great Caesar, the latter with whom I toured nationally for three years as headliners and as openers for the Indigo Girls, Allen Stone, Eric Hutchinson and others. I have taught the drums to a variety of students of all ages with an approach centered around enthusiasm for the instrument, technical development and fostering the student's personal voice.
I come from an artistic family. My father is a painter who has worked for 40 years to develop a unique, sophisticated spatial concept that he calls "multiple spatial planes." My grandmother, his mother, was a painter and designer who worked alongside Rivera, Orozco, Kahlo and the rest of the mexican muralists during the 1940's. She was the only female painter to ever assist Orozco on one of his murals. He later painted her portrait. My sisters are accessories designers. As Anndra Neen their work has been featured in Vogue, W, The New York Times and has been worn by Jessica Alba, Michelle Obama and many others.
